Hi shawn the the sprayed on texture you tried to paint was a water based texture and you can only paint it with a oil based paint ,Latex is water based and will soften the unpainted sipple or spandex (textures)If it looks like the ceiling was never primed prime it .The easyest way we do a ceiling is to sculpt useing a drywall compound
useing a wide drywall knife maby a 8" spead a thin layer of drywall mud (please thin your mud with water first just enough to make it spread easy not driping off the ceiling). Now that you have a nice thin layer of drywall compound on your ceiling now you can be creative making any pattern you like. We like to make circulr patterns or s's you can do any pattern you want.If you dont like the patern scrape it off right away and try another (make sure you put tape on your wall so you dont get drywall compound on them (we like to make a 4"or 6" boarder around the room (ceiling) taping it off to make a nice line up to your pattern and pull the tape off as soon as your finished before it dries)
after its done and has dried for 12 hours somtime it can take 2 days a fan in the bathroom helps drying time.use a oil base paint to paint your new ceiling(if you have made a border most times we paint then the same as the walls.
have fun !!
