Everything works the same whether you have a three way switch installed or not. If you do not have a recepticle in the ceiling you can get a support bar, cut a hole the size of the box in the ceiling and install the support. The support will connect in between the rafters whether they are 16 or 24 inches apart. If you do not have the wiring at the point where you want to put the fan, you can "fish" the wire from the breaker box through the wall into the attic and wire from there. Or if you can't get into the attic (which was my case) then you can drill a hole in the base and run a swag light kit to an outlet. The directions that usually come with the fans are pretty self explanatory. The only thing you need to watch is if in fact you have a 3 way switch installed and you want use a light and fan control, make sure it is designed for a 3 way switch. Or you can install a remote control. Either way is great!
