Ceiling Fan wiring from existing switch

Posted by Steve on June 18th, 2000 08:06 AM

I am trying to hook up ceiling fans in all of my bedrooms where they each have a single switch that controls a single outlet within that room. The switch wiring has 1 black, 1 white and 1 bare ground wire. I used 12-2 wire to run from the switch to the ceiling fan, but it only works if the lamp in the controlled outlet is on and the ceiling fan light seems to draw from the amperage supplied to the fan (i.e. when fan light on, fan goes slower).
How can I have the fan and light on the switch without having to keep the lamp in the outlet on?
