ceiling fan wiring

I have 4 wires coming out from the ceiling; black, white, red and ground. I thought the standard was black for fan and red for light.
I connected the black to black, white to white, red to black/white strip(for light kit) and the grounds. But the fan switch doesn't do anything and the light switch controls that fan instead.
I want to swap the fan and light wires from the wall control side instead of at the ceiling.
At the wall control, the combo fan/light switch has 3 wires; yellow, black and red and they are connected to black, black and red in the order.
Do I swap the black and the red so that it's black to red and red to black?
