Ceiling Fan wiring

Steve, I can't say for sure, because I have seen more than my share of strange wiring hookups, but I can hazard an educated guess. Many wiring hookups for ceiling fans include an extra wire (red) for the purpose of the light. And special switches are sold which allow you to control both the fan speed, and the light level individually from the same location. To do that with hard wiring (not wireless) requires the extra wire. I'd bet lunch at McDonalds that if you pull the switch which controls the fan out of it's box, and look around inside the box, you'd see the other end of that mysterious red wire.
