In short, in summer you want the airflow to be down (i.e., your fan blades to spin with the leading edge up) and in winter you want the airflow to be up (i.e., the leading edge of the fan blade to be down).

On my fan, the leading edge of the blades are up when the fan is running counter-clockwise. However, I believe that some fans may have the blade angle reversed, so it is best to watch your fan as it spins and to set the direction for summer so that the leading edge is pointing up.
