Ceiling fan install - follow-up info

Here's some additional detail:
This is in a new house that was wired 'specifically' for fans.
- The fan is the only new compnent.
- The fixture worked previously for a 'bare bulb'. This had to be installed in order to pass building inspection. The fan installation is an 'after-the-fact' homeowner responsibility.
- There are no other wires at the box besides the White, Black, Red, and Ground.
- Wires are in the same sheath (at the switch), as best I can tell. [there is no attic access]
- The previous ceiling fixture was wired to the white & red wires only. The same wall switch is wired Black & Red.
- Black was capped-off in the ceiling fixture with a wire nut.

I'm off to return my faulty meter to Home Depot. I'll feel better about things when I can actually measure them.
