Ceiling Fan Direction

I have a vaulted ceiling with two ceiling fans. The hot air in the house comes up the stair case and sits in the upstairs rooms (the ones with the ceiling fans and 15 foot ceilings). My qeustion is this. Should I have the fans "Pull" the hot air toward the ceiling or "Push" the air downward to us on the floor? I fear that by "pushing" it cools only the person directly under the fan, but warms the room as a whole by blowing the hot air nearest to the roof back down into the room... would it be more efficient to have them pull the hot air up, or does physics take care of that without my help?

Please post and e-mail me your response.
