ceiling fan

My husband and I recently replace an exhisting ceiling fan. The old fan worked fine, it was just outdated and ugly. Since we have installed the replacement, the new fan does not operate at full speed. When I turn it on high speed, it seems equivalent to low, and at low, it doesn't have enough momentum to even spin. I've checked the wiring, it appears to be connected correctly, the only thing I have notice is that the wiring in the ceiling is a slightly larger gauge than that of the fan, but that shouldn't be a problem right?
