Ann K you are exactly correct. I just went through this and use to work part time at a major company. You did not say if fam was a flush mount(close to ceiling) or on down rod. I put up a 42" in a utility room and could set under it and feel nothing so I put up a 44" and same thing. Both were flush mount. I moved the later to a shop that had open ceiling above and it blows like crazy. Down rods are better if you can use and you can oversize for a room. A lot of cheaper fans are just that and many do not have correct pitch on the blades.
