Cedar shingles

Posted by Mark Hardy on September 29th, 1998 12:51 PM

My 1922 homes siding (original) is 16 red cedar shingle that has been painted. I am getting ready to replace some fairly large sections. All of the local building supply houses here in the Raleigh, NC area carry only 18 red cedar (#1 Perfections) and 16 white cedar (grade B and better) shingles.

The 18s, as you know, are thicker at the butts than the 16s on my house. Since Im painting anyway, Im leaning toward using the white cedar 16s so the size is consistent. What would you do?

Any thoughts or suggestions are most appreciated.
