My 1922 home’s siding (original) is 16” red cedar shingle that has been painted. I am getting ready to replace some fairly large sections. All of the local building supply houses here in the Raleigh, NC area carry only 18” red cedar (#1 Perfections) and 16” white cedar (grade “B and better”) shingles.
The 18’s, as you know, are thicker at the butts than the 16’s on my house. Since I’m painting anyway, I’m leaning toward using the white cedar 16’s so the size is consistent. What would you do?
