Cedar Shingle Maintenance

We recently built an addition to our home and covered the outside with cedar shingles. What type of treatment (stain or wood preserver) can I put on the shingles that will maintain the natural color of them? How many coats should I apply? How often would I need to recoat in order to mantain the "new" appearance? Some shingles developed water stain marks after being exposed to rain. Is there a way I can restore the "new" look of these shingles before applying the stain? Thanks for addressing these questions for me.
