In reply to Waterproofing basement by Kent Jackson on January 16th, 1999 10:06 PM [Go to top of thread]

Listen to Rodney he is on the right track. Water leaks come from the outside
of your house and that is where the repair needs to be made. In all of my years
I have never repaired a basement leak from the inside of a house, and I could
have sold alot of expensive equipment to do so. I have found that over 90% of
basement leaks were caused by poor drainage. All of the land around your house
should slope away from your house at least a 1/4 inch per foot. You can verify
this with a 4 foot level and ruler. Two other causes of basement leaks are bad
gutters and broken storm sewer lines. What these people are trying to sell you
are bandaids. They are simply masking the problem. I can go into great detail
into how the problem originates, but my fingers are sore. In final, solve the
problem from the outside.
Oh, use your existing heating system to heat the basement, it will be much
cheaper than some aftermarket product.
