Linda, this sounds like a mess waiting to happen. :o( Your washer will leak or overflow some day, it is just a question of when. The carpet will get wet and stay wet, ruining whatever is under the carpet. They make big pans that are supposed to be big enough for the washer to fit inside and with sides deep enough that they are supposed to be able to catch all the water if you have a major leak. Try a plumbing supply house for these. I think that I would also take the carpet out from under the washer and dryer and lay sheet vinyl flooring in that area. Heat from the dryer is also a concern and possible fire hazard as you will never catch all the lint from the dryer. You might also want to think about the heavy duty supply hoses for the washer. The hoses that come with the unit are pretty good and we have never had a leak, but in your situation a minor leak would be a big problem.
