Carpet question

Posted by Mike on March 30th, 2003 08:37 PM

I have a problem with a broken board in the stairwell between the first and second story. Near the top of the stairwell, there is landing where the stairs make a right turn. One of the boards used to squeak when you stepped on it. Recently, one of the kids decided to skip a few steps and jumped to the landing, which cracked the board. It wasn't a clean break, but you can feel the board deflect when you step on it.

The landing and the stairs are carpeted. On the steps, the carpet wraps over the edge of the area when you step and extends down the vertical surface to the next step below it.

I'd like opinions on how this carpet is held down? How do I remove it so I can repair the board? Will taking it up damage it? Is each step individually carpeted, or is it a strip that is somehow held in place.

Thanks for the help,
