Carpet is used in basements everyday, if you have a water problem then carpet is not for you, if it is dry use carpet. Alot of people use berber, most berber carpets are made out of the same material as astro turf wich is used out doors in the rain & snow. I would recommend using a dehumidifier in the area to minimize the risk of mold.
