Can you not cut a piece of cardboard or other material (probably a better idea) and slide it in place of the filter when it is not in use?

You can buy sheets of magnetic material (like used on magnetic car signs) at many business supply stores. If the underside surface of hood is flat (and made or metal), something like that may be able to be stuck on between usage?
