Painting cane is a sure-fire way to shorten its life; cane needs to "breathe", and paint will only strangle it. It's likely you have panels of pre-woven cane, this is relatively easy and inexpensive to redo yourself, and you can expect a life of 15 years minimum for a backrest, less for a seat. If you must work with what you have for the moment, spray toning lacquer, available from paint- not hardware- stores will even out the color shift to unify it.
