Can 14-2 wire be spliced into 12-3 on a 20 amp circuit?

I want to add a fluorescent light (enclosed 15W fixture) into the closet adjacent to my laundry/utility room. The wire for the light is 14/2 and goes into my laundry/utility room. The closest outlet I could splice into is the clothes washing machine (I have a separate 20 amp circuit (12/3 wire) for my clothes washer on the other side of that closet's wall). Would it be okay to splice the 14/2 with 12/3 at the outlet? Could I use the lower screws on that outlet? Or am I out of luck and will need to run the 14/2 to the next closest 15 amp outlet? Thanks!
