Cabinet Painting

I am having my cabinets painted. They are a dark stain. A deglosser was applied the first day and no sanding has been done. Last night they applied primer. My questions are should they have done any sanding at all or only if needed. Also the primer was applied in one coat, not very smooth. I am used to primering a car a smooth finish before applying paint. Should the primer on the cabinets have been applied in the same manner? Or as the painter said the primer is just applied lightly so paint can adhere. I thought the primer should be applied the same way as paint. Make it look like a finish then the paint is applied. Is the job that is being done sound professional or am I just overly critical?
