Once a wood is stained, you probably won't be able to stain without stripping and sanding to open the pores of the wood to accept a new stain. But going to a darker distressed look is probably pretty easy using some of the antiquing or faux finish techniques. Go look in the decorating books at your book store or the books at Home Depot or Lowes. Some of the effects that you can achieve with the paints and glazes are pretty darn clever and a lot easier to achieve than strip and stain.
