brick repair

I have a brick fireplace. the face of several bricks have fallen off the outside at the top due to moisture seeping in the brick and then freezing. I was told the only repair is to remove the cap and all the bricks down to where last brick problem is and replace/reset the bricks and new cap. cost of over $2000.00.
Can I repair the damaged bricks and then seal it with some product to keep the moisture out? I was thinking of using thinset motar like I used to set ceramic tile to re-attach the face of the brick, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort or not....
