We have uncovered an old brick patio (ca. 1800s) which was laid on the ground (no grout). The patio has a drainage system and is in fairly good shape but is unlevel in places and missing bricks in places. Additionally, it will be hard to keep up because when we power wash it, the dirt/mud continues to surface. Also, we can expect grass to appear between the bricks again. Our question is this: Has anyone facing this situation simply poured mortar over the bricks and brushed it between bricks and then "washed" it over the bricks to level it out and to "seal" the bricks? We don't want to cover the bricks with cement and we also don't want to have to pull up each brick and lay the patio again if possible.
