Brick floor finishes

Posted by Tom Parker on October 5th, 1999 10:27 AM

We have a brick floor in our den. We did a good job acid etching it and properly rinsing it and waited 6 weeks and then applied ValOil (by ValSpar). After a few weeks it began to peel up. We removed the finish with a strong solvent and thoroughly rinsed it. It been 2 months since the rinsing.

We desire an "old world" look. Someone has suggested a Minwax stain and then a sealer (which one I don't know) Minwax company reps will not suggest anything since their product is for wood. We've tested H&C Plus by S/W but it doesn't give any shine at all and no color. Could the H&C Plus be tinted? They make what the call colored stains but these are opaque and would let any of the brick color thru.

Any suggestions? We want to "tone down" the brick color as a row of them don't match and darken the look. We would like the floor to be as maintainance free as possible.

Thanks, Tom
