The trick in breaking a rock has to do with the total amount of energy impacted into the rock. If you would take a 10 lb sledge and hit the rock you have (1 ft thick, 3 ft dia) solid in the middle, I bet the rock will break into at least two pieces in less than 100 hits. This is the way the rock hammers mounted on excavators and backhoes work. It is not so much the energy per hit as the total energy put into the rock. I have personnaly used this methon on a 3 ft diameter football shaped rock and it worked well. (WEAR YOUR EYE PROTECTION!)
Good luck,
