Brad nailer vs Finishing nailer

Posted by C. Johnston on January 7th, 2003 06:17 PM

I've had my sights set on a 16 gauge finishing nailer, but when I went to buy it, it was strongly suggested to me that an 18 gauge was all I needed. The salesmen were great and I know they were trying to be helpful, but I'd really like another opinion. I will mainly use my nailer for building furniture. I'll be making a deacons bench, coffee table, night stand, just to name a few projects, over the next while. I'm not sure bigger is better when it comes to nailers, but I do like the idea of the 2 1/2 inch nails vs the 2 inch nails. My questions are; Is there a big difference in the size of the head on a 16 gauge nail compared to an 18 gauge nail? Would a 16 gauge finishing nail be too big to use on furniture projects?
