jeff, you could scrape that mastic off with a razor scraper or sharp putty knife, sharpen if needed with file as you go along

even like bob says plaster is strong stuff, even if you gotta help it off with a hammer on the ass end of your scraper, you can skin coat and repair any gouges or damage you do removing the mastic

once you get into it though youll probally find as bob says, it will come off resonably easy

a skin coat, is joint compound. i like the blue , light weight joint compound. skin coat is the thinnest coat you can apply. use a 6 or 8 inch knife or float although a float needs an experenced hand, the knifes are easyer for a first timer

thin as youu can squeez on, 3 coats with a day inbetween to dry. then after last coat is dry, light sand to smooth with 180 grit paper, spot prime with roller and oil primer, spot primeing is primer only on the arears you have repaired, saves time and work

then after skin coating and primer you top coats will hide all repairs and plaster walls will show there beauty and appear to be in good condition

bathrooms are quick work as they are small, only difficult to work in as they confined spaces and fixtures to work around and under make it seem harder than it actually is
