You are a genius, sir! I followed your advice, and when the water emptied from the washer into a bucket, a most unbelievable stench came with it, along with bits of black, disgusting scum.
Now, however, I am furious that I have a Maytag Neptune only two years old (that cost about twice as much as a top-loading machine) that stinks. Lucky for me, the poor old Maytag repairman who never has anything to do will have plenty of time to listen to me rant and rave about how Maytag washers STINK!
I did run a heavy stain cycle with hot water and bleach and hope that it will help.
