Sorry Bob, didn't see your question at first as it was within another "string" You need to scroll completely down to the end of all the messages to place a new post:
A wax ring with a plastic insert should take up almost no extra height when installed. Are you sure the old wax ring was completely removed or was the plastic ring from the old still stuck down to the drain? It may be possible that you have a 4 inch ring and trying to install it on a 3 inch drain? Also, there are wax rings with less thickness for installations where the drain is higher than most. Sometimes if the wax rings are cold when installed it is difficult to get them completely pressed down. I have found that warming them in a microwave for about 10 seconds helps extrude them out if they are cold.
