Hello Rob: It sounds like your pilot flame is a little weak, possibly a partial blockage. You could try building a barricade around it with empty gas cans. Just kidding...honestly. I'm having a lot of success installing tankless heaters outdoors which have no pilot light. They are power-vented with sealed combustion, and have electronic ignition. (And yes, I mount them 4ft off the ground, away from ALL combustibles) If you'd like info on them, please e-mail, or call 800 851 9891. I like Jay's suggestion. Cheers, Brian.
