Blackening of my Red Cedar Shingles

In reply to prevent red cedar shingles from blackening; invisible storms by Pat Baker on October 8th, 1999 04:48 PM [Go to top of thread]

My shingles have already blackend. I used to respray my house every year with Olympic weatherproofing clear stain and did not do it this year because it appeared as if I was getting a build up on the shingles. Like thick resideu from the spray. I am reluctant to stain the shingles because I love the look of Red Cedar. I have painted the trim on my house Essex Green so it is quite attractive with the Red Cedar but now that they are whitening and blackening it doesn't look as nice as when the shingles were fresh.
What should I use to remove the black? The whole house and garage have black spots everywhere.
Should I use the suggestion of Jim posted on November 25,1999? ( mix of Tri-sodium-phosphate and chlorine bleach) and then follow the advice of Gaby posted on October 8, 1999
Any advice would be appreciated.
