This could be expansion/contraction of the water pipe(s) probably the hot water side. I have the same situation in my own house where I don't hear anything while the water is running or when I shut it off, but about 1 to 2 hours later there is a "bang" when the pipe suddenly slips in one of the clamps as it contracts.
Assuming you can get to these pipes in the basement, you could replace the metal clamps with the new plastic clamps that will allow the pipe to expand and contract without the "stick/slip" which causes the banging noise.
