Best Way to Remove Contact Cement after Removing Laminate?

For whatever reason, the formica facings that were put on the cabinets in my kitchen by the previous owners in the mid-80's started popping loose from the cabinet fronts (doors and frames) and/or chipping and breaking. It was loose at almost every edge, so I (gulp)decided to just take it all off. I found a loose edge and began lifting it and running a flat metal yard stick under it and it all pretty much popped right off. Now, what is the best way to get the contact glue off that was used to glue down the laminate? We are making new cabinet doors and drawer fronts and I just want to be able to paint the cabinet frame/trim? Anys suggestions on how best to get the contact cement off...sand or use solvent, then sand?

Thanks,

DD
