First of all make sure that the engine is cool so that the fan won't turn on!
Dave, besides my addiction to woodworking and this board, I enjoy(?) working on autos. There are two possibilities here. First is that the cable has stretched some, in this case loosen the kick panel that the handle is attached to and pull on the handle while taking up the slack with the panel loosened up. Second, is that the cable has broken somewhere, in which case crawl underneath the front of the car with a flashlight. Look up and find the release and work your hand up until you can push up on the release lever to pop the hood open to the first catch, a stick may help if you can't work your arm in that far. Also sometimes the cable may break and the front part of the cable may be accessible from underneath, so if you can see that part hanging down grab it instead of wrestling you arm up to the release.
