I also had zbrick on a living room wall. We bought the house figuring that it wouldn't be too hard to get rid of the stuff but, well, we were wrong. I ended up replacing the drywall. It wasn't too expensive - $100 or so for materials -but it took a lot of time and work (and what a mess!). You could try painting it and see if you like the results, but keep in mind that over time the cracks and such will collect dust. I'd suggest that, if it's not feasible to replace the drywall, go ahead and pry off the zbrick (try to get as much of the mortar as you can too) and put up paneling. This'll tear up the drywall pretty bad but you'll be covering it with the paneling anyway.
