This stuff has been around for 25+ years. Pergo has been in Europe for that long. Only since the mid 80's or so did it start making its way to the States. IKEA was one of the first retailers.
If you have a more specific question, I/we can help. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the 'stuff'. The brand and its construction has a lot to do with an answer to your question. There are ones that are SOLID wood from top to bottom, there are ones that are only solid on top, and there are ones that are all 'by-products' from top to bottom.
