Knotty Pine can be made into a beautiful piece of wood with little care.
In your case, sounds like you have some shadows left by different things hanging on the wall for may years.
I would suggest to acquire some good ole vinegar and wipe down all the walls. Then get some very fine grit sand paper and buy a palm sander and sand the walls down in the direction of the grain.
This is not a major sanding job, just to remove the old stuff and feather out the shadows.
Then take a good cleaning with fine steel wool, then with a catch rag, get off all the dust.
Now paint on lightly some sand sealer product to ensure that the new stain will stain evenly.
Go to the store and look at stains that are penetrating and see what they look on Pine. Make sure you look at Pine samples only.
Then find your stain and lightly stain in the direction of the grain with a rag.
When the color has been obtained, then seal the wood with WATER based polyurethane. I would suggest a nice SATIN finish, little sheen, and nice appearance.
You should be back in business. Take great pains in the staining as this will reveal wonderful secrets.
