I want to do some work in my basement but to do what I want I have to move two of the support collums. I was wondering if I have to remove the whole beam or wether I can just add on somehow??? At the moment I have a 3-ply 2x8 beam. Now according to the code book I can use a glue-laminated beam but then I have to remove the old beam and I really dont want to do that.

Also is it possible so put the support collum on just the conc. floor or do I have to cut open the floor and poor a new collum pad.
