I can't answer your question. With your "laminated" 4 by 10 beam it really depends upon the ratings given by the manufacturer and you need to ask your supplier or the company. Regular wood beams would support less as Steve mentioned. With steel, you need to talk to your steel supply company. Steel can vary by size and thickness, etc. and their structural engineer may be able to tell you. You need to know the dead and live load to be put on a 2 story house with a beam supporting one floor. Some of them may not tell you. When I contacted one about some steel building beams, they said they would make and sell what ever I order but they didn't do any engineering.
