Beam for load-bearing wall replacement...

We are replacing a load-bearing wall to combine kitchen
and dining room into one room. The span between the two
is 11'3". Consulting several sources (including two
pro contractor buddies), it appears that
given the general structure of the whole operation,
a 3" square steel beam an appropriate choice. My
spouse, however, would like to check this against further
sources. We have a copy of the state building code,
which is less than useless, and I'm wondering if anyone
can recommend a good book with this sort of info.

Thank you...
