Personally I would remove the casings refinish and then re-insatll. If your house is older and has shifted the miters joints may open. To remove the casing use a flat bar and place something against the wall to protect it while prying. Any nails that come away with the casing should be pulled through from the backside to avoid splintering the finished side of the casing. If the windows are out of square the problem becomes a little more complicated. Wood filler won't do the job for gaps that large
