Bathroom tile questions

Posted by Dave on December 28th, 2000 11:37 AM

I loked back at old posts - some of my questions were answered but I still have a few -

I am tiling bathtub/shower walls with 12" tiles - rough finish, not glass-like glazed. I'm tearing out the plaster walls & replacing with cement backer board.

Will thinset mortar hold heavy tiles onto the walls, or should I use a premixed mastic? Any recommendations on the type/composition of mortar to use?

For the floor tiles, I need to lay a bed of mortar instead of using backerboard - because I'm laying radiant floor heating. Should I just use generic thinset mortar here? Or is there a specific type needed? (I thought the composition was more grainy & dry for this type of application.) The manufacturer recommends a "flex mortar".

Any other tips or websites would be appreciated.
