Basement waterproofing - who's been there?

Please, I would like to hear from people who have had their basements waterproofed -
what worked and what didn't.
I am leaning towards an inside drain system due to cost and feasability.
So many people say they don't work, but so many people say they do.
The part I don't like, is the water still travels from the outside through the blocks on its way to the trench or drain.
The latest idea is to use a plastic triangular channel that glues to the floor and walls as the trench. That leads to a sump, just like using pipe or whatever in a dug trench.
Any stories out there ? I sure appreciate it.
