basement water

Posted by Bruce on July 28th, 1998 05:45 PM

6 years ago when my house was being constructed, I kept close watch on the basement during the spring to see what kind of water problems may arise. Even though drainage pipes were in place and connected to a hole for a sump pump, there was never any water in the basement, and very little running into the hole. The very next year, with pumps installed, 3 inches of water came in after the electricity quit and the two pumps were not working. A year later, after we received 6-inches of rain overnight, the pumps could not keep up with the volume and I had 18 inches of water. I responded by supplementing my pumps with two additional 1/2 horsepower pumps with 2-inch discharges. This year, I had a relatively minor problem after one hard rainfall and only had 1/2 inch on one end of the basement. Furthermore, I have at least one pump running, and often two, 24 hours a day from May through June/July. Is there something else I can do?
