My house is a one story ranch in Central New Jersey. The main beam in my basement is made up of three 14 foot 2x10's ( total length of 50 feet ) each overlaping the other midway at the 7 foot mark. There is a support post under each of these overlap points. There are 6 support posts and the beam rests on the block foundation on each end. I would like to remove two ajoining posts, creating a 21 foot opening in the center. Can this be done by bolting a steel plate to each side of the beam extending beyond the remaining posts? I was thinking of one half inch by nine inch steel ? Any sugestions you can offer would be helpful.
