Hi, Hippie. If I was looking for a functional barn, I would sure look at a metal pole barn. There are kits in many different sizes available and all you have to supply is the concrete pad plus what plumbing and electrical that you choose. My daughter has a wood barn that was built in the early '70's (great time, eh?) and it is a maintenance headache. The critters eat the wood or it rots. You have to paint regularly.

But why didn't our forefathers build metal barns? For the same reason that they used linseed oil for finishes. It was cheap and available. Todays metal barns are cheap and available. And putting in a few bolts is an easier way to get a good clearspan than framing wood.
