Banging is a natural unwanted process when the radiator is trapping water inside. After decades, radiators sink into the floor on the side opposite the pipe, This traps water in the radiator. Someone can take wedges of the type used to align door or window frames and force them under the side of the radiator with the vent sticking out the side. This lets the water fall back downstairs instead of pooling inside the radiator to be slammed up against the radiator end by the rapidly entering steam.
