Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Bamboo Flooring....

WHAT KIND OF FINISH DOES IT HAVE? Bamboo flooring product is finished in either “high gloss” or “matte” with several coats of 100% solids UV cured acrylic urethane which makes it abrasion and spill resistant. Additionally, the urethane may have protective agents, such as Aluminum Oxide or Ceramic added to the finish.

WHAT KIND OF WAX SHOULD BE USED? Wax, that is floor finishes that actually contain wax should never be used, our product is designed to be “maintenance free”. If a floor finish is desired because of esthetics or to protect from heavy spills, although not necessary, a cross-linked acrylic floor finish may be used.

WHAT ABOUT SPILLS & HEAVY TRAFFIC? The tests that we have done, both abrasion resistance and chemical/stain resistance show that the finish is one of the toughest to be found in the wood flooring industry. Multiple chemical solutions were applied to the finish and left on for 24 hours with no effect, while abrasion tests show minimal weight loss.

HOW HARD IS IT? When tested according to standard national Wood flooring Association Test, Janka Ball hardness Test, our bamboo flooring product demonstrated a hardness of 1320 PSI. Very strong in comparison to other hardwoods, such as Oak at 1290 PSI.

CAN BAMBOO FLOORING BE SANDED? Yes, bamboo flooring product sands quite easily and due to it’s 3/16” thick top layer it could probably be sanded and refinished as many as five times, depending on the depth of damage.

WILL IT CUP? No. Third generation bamboo flooring, even when installed on radiant heated concrete sub floor, will not buckle, cup or warp when properly applied and maintained in accordance with our manufactures installation instructions.

CAN IT BE GLUED DOWN OR NAILED DOWN? Bamboo flooring product can be either glued or nailed, or installed in any manner acceptable for standard hardwood flooring.

WHAT IS THE MOISTURE CONTENT? Bamboo flooring is kiln dried and sealed, it is interior moisture is bound to and maintained at 8% to 10%.

DO YOU NEED TO ALLOW FOR EXPANSION? Our bamboo flooring product is very stable with regard to expansion or contraction from moisture gain or loss; (we have a change coefficient of .00144 lower than almost any wood). However good practice dictates that an expansion gap of at least ¼ inches be allowed, especially in larger rooms.

CAN IT BE INSTALLED BELOW GRADE? Bamboo flooring product can be installed on, above, or below grade, and only requiring sensible precautions. Moisture can be a problem below grade even when no moisture exists at the time of installation, so a vapor barrier, or sleeper system, or both should be used for nail down, and a two part urethane adhesive should be used for glue down.

WHAT COLORS ARE AVAILABLE? Natural color, “light blond”, and carbonized color, “carmel brown”. Carbonized is a cooking process, it creates a natural darker color, it is not a stain. Custom stain colors are available from manufacturers.
