If you want to be legal about it - an aesbestos abatement specialist needs to come in and remove the shingles where the unit will go. Unfortunately, they probably won't be able to cut any of the shingles, so you'll be left with some really wide trim around the unit to cover up where half-shingles couldn't be replaced. (You may be able to find some shingles that have a similar look that are made out of cement board or wood.)

Or you can just hold your breath and cut with a circular saw. (This method is not recommended.)
