Boy, Jen, those are some dreaded words, LOL, and right in line with 1975.

If the linoleum has a flat surface with no indented pattern, new sheet vinyl can be installed directly over it, but it does require some sanding to rough the surface for adhesion. (I'll leave the asbestos possibility here to Tom; I'd doubt any, but that's not my field.)

If the linoleum does have indented pattern, it could be removed, with or without any underlayment prior to installing new, or new underlayment can be put down over top of the linoleum and new vinyl or other flooring installed from there.
